About Us

Renata Pellino-Porter: I am a mother and wife of some of the funniest people I know. There is a lot of laughter, love, and “going with the flow” in our house. Both of my kids are Type 1 diabetics. My daughter, Kelsey, was diagnosed when she was just 4 years old. She is now 17 and faces all of those teenage worries. My son, Marty, was diagnosed this February. He is 11…and a boy….need I say more? We have also just moved from Seattle, WA USA to Auckland, New Zealand and the math conversions will be the death of me.
I wanted to do a blog because I think we are really unique as a family. Two diabetics, one girl, one boy, one teen, one tween, and 12 years of experiences to share. I hope that we can help support some families in understanding that, yeah it’s one disease but boy does it vary between each child, each day and each year. My kids have also agreed to get involved and to be available for support by sharing thier own stories and responding to emails.

Kelsey Pellino-Porter: Is 17 and in her 12th year (11th grade). Kelsey has decided that she will finish college (high school) after next year and start taking culinary classes to become a Pastry Chef. YEP, you read that right. A type 1 diabetic who wants to be a pastry chef. Kelsey plays volleyball and also coaches the younger years at her school.

Diagnosed: August 1997, at age 4

Her Plan: 13 units of Lantus in the morning, carb ratio is 2:15 (2 units of humalog for every 15 carbs) for most meals and 1:10 for dinner, 12 units of Lantus at night. Kelsey also takes 100mcg of Synthroid for her thyroid.

He hasn’t quite decided on what new sports he will play here in New Zealand, there are so many to choose from. Marty loves to play his guitar and video games.

Diagnosed: February 2009, at age 9.

His Plan: 10 Units of Lantus in the morning, carb ratio is 1:10 (1 unit of Humalog for every 10 carbs). 15 units of Lantus at night.

Latest A1C: July 8.2 (April 8.4 Dec. 7.5 Sept. 7.2)

Mike Porter: I am the dad, husband, tech support, logo designer, teacher, artist and hot head of the house. I was also a very sick child and I assume that the diabetes is part and parcel of an immune deficiency that caused me to be allergic to everything, including food, until I was around 10 or 12 years old. My dad liked to say that I was allergic to work. Oddly enough, that’s what I do most of the time.
The worst day of my life was when I found out that Kelsey was in the hospital, diagnosed as diabetic and almost died in the process. The second worst was when Marty was diagnosed. Thankfully we were able to see the signs and we got him into the hospital right away.
I am more than willing to lend an ear, however since I have a list of projects 10 miles long, I may be on here far less than the rest of the family. I will be making contributions in other ways. So keep coming back, we have lots of personal experience with diabetes, raising two extremely different kids and some other things in store.

My PlanAbout 3 or 4 beers a night, if possible and Erdinger if available.
